Unmet Transit Needs Hearing
Supervisors Chambers, County Courthouse, Tuesday, 1:30pm
The annual unmet transit needs process is the time when jurisdictions identify reasonable transit and alternative transportation needs that could be met. Typically, a determination is made that there are no needs that are unreasonable to meet, and a chunk of Transportation Development Act (TDA) funding, the primary source of transit operating funds, is reallocated to the road maintenance budget. Last year the County spent nearly $1 million of TDA funds on road maintenance.
To their credit, the county has gradually been shifting more of that money into various transit projects, including a planned launch of transit service in Southern Humboldt this year.
We need to support the County’s efforts towards better expenditure of these funds, and more remains to be done if we are to have more frequent and well-coordinated service in the Humboldt Bay micropolitan area.
We need to continue working towards:
KMUD Interview with Jan, the driver of the Quail, Southern Humboldt's transit bus, does a good job of explaining why transit is important for SoHum, and what the peril is in losing it.
The Quail is open to the public on Tuesdays for trips from Garberville/Redway to Eureka (1st and 3rd Tuesday) or Fortuna (2nd and 4th Tuesday). Schedule is here or call HTA at 443-0826 for more info.
There's also a group in SoHum that is exploring options for transit in SoHum. Contact Julia Minton to get involved.

HTA Board and Staff, clockwise from the back: Stan Binnie - Trinidad (reaching for a donut, gotcha Stan! ;-) ), Greg Pratt - Director of Operations, Paul Pitino - Chairperson - Arcata, Nel Fregoso - General Manager, Dean Glazier - Fortuna, Johanna Rodoni - Humboldt County, Bud Leonard - Rio Dell.
I went to the TAC meeting yesterday to get a feel for the pulse of transportation planners and how they are responding to increasing gas prices and perpetually shrinking budgets.
