Thanks to Rob Christensen for this post:
When I first moved here there was twice a day greyhound bus service between Redding and Eureka via 299 and 101. The greyhound service also doubled as a Amtrak thruway bus for passengers. I used the service a couple of times to complete trips up and down California and also to visit family in Redding. I was disappointed when the service was discontinued along with the Greyhound service that serviced coastal Oregon up to Portland and have kept an eye on developments to create a patchwork system through the Trinity Alps.
Trinity County has received Stimulus Funds and is now running M/W/F service on the Downriver Route (Willow Creek to Weaverville) and the new Weaver to Redding bus. Previously the Downriver route only ran once a week on Tuesdays. It is now possible for someone to go to Redding via transit on those days and connect to other transit options at the RABA or Redding Train Station. I've described the trips below. Maybe this would be worthwhile for the green-wheels website?
Arcata to Redding:
Leave Arcata Transit Center @ 8:25 a.m. (HTA Bus Service) {$3.50}
Arrive in Willow Creek at HWY 299 and HWY 96 Junction @ 9:25 a.m.
Depart Willow Creek at HWY 299 and HWY 96 Junction @ 9:45 a.m. (Trinity Transit Bus Service) {$5.00}
Arrive at the Weaverville Library @ 11:11 a.m.
Depart Weaverville Library @ 1:05 p.m.(Trinity Transit Bus Service) {$5.00}
Arrive at Redding's RABA station @ 2:16 p.m.
Total Time: 5 hours 51 minutes
Total Cost: $13.50
Redding to Arcata:
Leave Redding's RABA station @ 9:40 a.m. -or- Redding's Greyhound station @ 9:45 a.m. (Trinity Transit Bus Service) {$5.00}
Arrive at the Weaverville Library @ 11:03 a.m.
Leave the Weaverville Library @ 2:45 p.m. (Trinity Transit Bus Service) {$5.00}
Arrive in Willow Creek at HWY 299 and HWY 96 Junction @ 4:08 p.m.
Depart Willow Creek at HWY 299 and HWY 96 Junction @ 4:40 p.m. (HTA Bus Service) {$3.50}
Arrive at Arcata Transit Center @ 5:30 p.m.
Total Time: 7 hours 50 minutes
Total Cost $13.50
I'm sure that this wouldn't be the most ideal way for folks to travel and some people may not like the long lay over in Weaverville. But, it's a nice way to connect Northern California's communities and also to provide better connections to transit to Oregon. I'm going to try this out on my trip to Southern California in March, I plan to ride Amtrak after reaching Redding.
